Disco Step-by-Step® - the first television show dedicated to disco music, dance instruction, and hustle dancing. It began production in 1975 and ended in 1980. This dance segment helped promote the movie, "Saturday Night Fever" prior to its general public release in 1977. A film clip featuring John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney hustle dancing was edited and inserted into the show during post-production. The promotional clip was sent to the show by producer, Robert Stigwood. This was the very first time any "Saturday Night Fever" movie footage or its' soundtrack music was publicly aired. This part of the clip was used because it featured John Travolta hustle dancing and the music seguewayed perfectly with the first song, "Jack and Jill" by Raydio. One can tell by the casual sounding introduction to this segment that no special consideration was being given to the Bee Gees song or to the movie. It was treated as just another segment introduction. No extra hype was pre-planned. The host did mention the movie in his voice-over comments at the end of the segment stating: "...and 'More Than a Woman' from 'Saturday Night Fever' with the Bee Gees!" No one knew at this early date just what a tremendoust impact the movie and its' music would have on the disco movement. In early 1978, an entire Disco Step-by-Step® show was dedicated to the film. Many songs from the soundtrack were featured. The "Saturday Night Fever" movie soundtrack became the largest selling album in the world until 1983. To date it is still the largest selling "soundtrack" in history. The film is notable for being one of the first instances of cross-media marketing, with the tie-in soundtrack being used to help promote the film before its release and the film popularizing the entire soundtrack after its release. Disco Step-by-Step® also helped to promote "Thank God It's Friday" and in 1978 dedicated an entire show to that movie and soundtrack. Songs: "Jack and Jill" by Raydio and "More Than A Woman" by the Bee Gees. Disco Step-by-Step® was produced, written, and created by Marty Angelo.
